What Sound Does A Deer Make? Before going deer hunting, it is necessary to understand a little about deer, their habits, and the sounds they make. Understanding these aspects of the animals and their behavior will make you a better hunter and improve your chances of success. Deer make sounds from grunts to snorts, bleats, wheezes, and sniffs. The hunter needs to understand what these sounds mean. Certain deer sounds mean that your presence has been detected, while other sounds will let you know that your cover has not been compromised. Learning to identify deer sounds will alert you to deer in the area and give you an idea of what the animals are doing. This information is crucial for a hunter and part of the bushcraft necessary for a successful hunt. We have a helpful breakdown of the sounds you can expect to hear while hunting deer. Do Deer Make A Noise? Mostly deer seem like quiet, docile animals that do not make much sound. Deer are prey animals which makes it in their interest not to make a lot of noise. While deer are perceived as quiet animals most of the time, they have vocalizations and communication sounds that every deer hunter should learn to recognize. Hunting is a total sensory immersion activity that requires sight, sound, feel, and instinct. This characteristic of hunting is one of the primary factors that attract outdoor people to hunting. Sound can regularly alert you to the presence of deer in the vicinity, even before you make visual contact with the animal. Even though the hunt is primarily for male deer, learning to distinguish the sound of female and fawn may alert you to the presence of a deer herd with a male tagging along. General Deer Sounds Several sounds are familiar to all deer and primarily relate to safety or warning communication between the animals. These sounds are essential for the hunter to recognize because they may indicate that the deer are aware of the hunter’s presence or they are suspicious that danger is nearby. The Deer Sniff The sniff sounds like a human sniff on steroids. Imagine a good, robust sniff, with the air drawn forcefully into the wide deer nostrils. The deer sniff serves two purposes; it allows the deer to better sample the air for the scent of danger, and it alerts the other group members that they should become alert and scan for danger. The sniff indicates that the deer is suspicious that all is not well in their immediate surroundings. If you hear this sound from the deer, you should stop and hunker down until the deer settle again before continuing your stalk. If the deer do not detect any further sign of danger after the sniff, they will settle down and resume their normal activities. The Deer Stomp The deer stomp is another alert notification and is the human equivalent of nudging someone else to get their attention. Deer perform the stomp by lifting a foreleg and stomping the hoof on the ground. The stomp sounds like hitting the ground with a stout stick. The meaning behind the stomp is to attract the attention of the other members of the herd and let them know to look out for possible danger. The deer that performed the stomp detected something that made it nervous, but it was unsure if there was danger. The stomp tells the other deer to scan for danger. Sometimes the deer perform the sniff combined with the stomp, and while it may sound like the latest modern dance craze, the sniff-n-stomp, it is no party for the deer! The deer will be on high alert if you hear these sounds combined, and you should pause and remain motionless and try to conceal yourself from the deer to avoid detection. The Deer Snort The deer snort is a sharp exhalation of breath through the nose of the deer. This contrasts with the sniff, a sudden, acute inhalation of air into the nose. The snort is much louder than the sniff and will be clearly audible to the hunter. The deer issue a snort when they have identified an immediate threat in the area. The rest of the herd will react immediately to the sound, and the herd will likely run off, led by the deer that snorted to guide them away from the perceived danger. If you hear the deer snort, your cover is likely blown, and the deer detected you or some other danger in the area spooked them. Watch the way the deer run. If the deer ran away from your position, they likely detected your presence, but if they ran in your general direction, it might have been something else that caused them to spook. After this incident, the deer will be on high alert and will take some time to calm down and settle into a feeding routine. The Deer Scream The deer scream sounds very much like a human scream, and the reason for the scream is similar to the reason people scream. Deer will scream when caught by a predator, trapped in a fence, or otherwise cornered. The scream is an expression of distress, fear, or pain. If you hear this call as a hunter, it may mean a deer has been caught by a natural predator or the deer is in some form of trouble. It is worth investigating this call because, if nothing else, you can put the deer out of its misery or rescue a trapped animal. Deer Doe Sounds Certain deer sounds are specific to the female deer or doe. These are generally social sounds the doe will make to interact and communicate with other herd members or her fawn. The Doe Estrus Bleat The doe estrus bleat is a sound the does make to let the bucks know that they are in heat and ready to mate. The sound of an estrus bleat from a doe is a high-pitched bleat that sounds like a combination of a bleat and a whistle. The female deer only make this sound for a few weeks of the year when they come into heat. This sound is not typical for a hunter to hear, but if you are lucky enough to hear it, it means that a buck is in the area and will likely respond to the female’s call. The deer will not be in a high alert state for danger, and your chances are looking good to fill your tag! Hunters will often use an artificial call that mimics a doe estrus call to lure bucks into the area to look for the female ready to breed. The Doe Bleat The bleating of a doe deer is a social vocalization to communicate with other herd members and her fawn. The sound indicates contentment and relaxation and means the animal, and likely the entire herd feels safe and unthreatened. The bleat is high-pitched with a vibrato similar to a goat bleat and sounds gentle and soothing. If you hear this sound among the does, you can be sure your presence has not been detected. The Doe Grunt All deer grunt, but you can distinguish between the genders by the pitch of the grunt. The doe grunt sounds similar to that of the buck, only at a higher pitch due to the smaller body mass of the doe. A doe produces grunts to communicate with other animals in the herd as a form of social interaction. They will also grunt to their fawns to let them know mom is moving on, and the fawn must follow. The grunting of a doe indicates a relaxed atmosphere in the herd, with no tension caused by potential threats. If you hear these grunts while hunting, you can be sure the herd has not seen you caught your scent in the wind. Deer Fawn Sounds Deer fawns also vocalize, mainly to communicate and bond with the mother, interact with other fawns or find themselves in distress. Deer Fawn Bleat Fawns are playful, just like any other baby animal, and like to prance and play with other fawns in the herd. Fawn bleats are commonly heard as an expression of fun or joy as the fawns romp and play with each other. The bleating is very similar to that of a goat and is much higher pitched than the bleating of a doe due to the small body mass and shorter windpipe of the fawn. Fawns will also bleat when communicating with their mothers, call their mothers if they cannot see her in the herd, or tell her to wait up! Fawn bleating is generally a sign that the herd is not on high alert. The fawns will usually remain silent if any adult in the herd has produced an alert call. If you hear fawns bleating while you are hunting, the deer group is unlikely to be aware of your presence in the area. Deer Fawn Nursing Bleat Fawns have a specific vocalization for when they want to nurse from their mothers. The sound is a high-pitched “eee-aaaw” sound. This fawn nursing bleat is also a means of bonding with its mother. This sound is intended for the mother’s ears only and is not loud, making it difficult for a hunter to hear this call unless the herd is within a few dozen feet. Nursing bleats are not heard if the deer are on high alert. If fawns are interested in nursing, it usually means the herd is not feeling threatened. Deer Fawn In Distress A deer fawn has a specific distress call intended to call adult deer to its defense or aid when it is in trouble. Both male and female deer will respond to a fawn distress call and come to the fawn’s aid, not only the fawn’s mother. Hunters often use an artificial fawn distress call to call a herd closer to the hunter’s position. This is useful if the herd has a legal male since he will follow the herd and may be drawn within shooting range. When you hear a distress call from a fawn, the herd will be on high alert, and your should limit your movements and ensure you are downwind to avoid detection. Buck Deer Sounds The buck is the most vocal deer in the herd, especially the dominant buck. The buck uses sounds to declare his dominance, challenge other bucks, and the sounds of full-blown combat. Snort-Wheeze Sounds From Bucks The snort-wheeze is a common vocalization when two bucks face off in a battle for dominance. The confrontations will often be prefaced with a few snorts, followed by snorts with a loud wheezing sound, which means a fight is imminent. The snort-wheeze sounds are generally heard during the rut when bucks challenge each other for breeding rights. When you hear this sound as a hunter, you can be sure the attention of the deer is not on you but on the impending battle. The antler rattle often follows the snort-wheeze as the two combatants clash. The Antler Rattle The antler rattle is the sound of two bucks fighting each other with their antlers. This fight is more a show of strength than a fight to the death. The sound of the clashing antlers can be heard for some distance in the wilderness. If you hear the antler rattle, you can approach the deer with relative safety since their attention is focused on their opponent rather than watching for danger. Other deer in the area will often show up as spectators to the fight and watch with interest. This behavior is used by hunters that mimic the snort-wheeze, followed by rattling antlers to attract deer to the area to investigate. The Buck Grunt While bucks also make soft grunting noises to communicate with other herd members, they also have a harsh, loud grunt intended to assert dominance over another buck in the area. These short, deep, harsh grunts are males declaring their territorial dominance and warning other bucks to stay clear. Hunters mimic these calls to attract the dominant male in the area to investigate a possible intruder on his turf. This call from a buck is not a warning vocalization and does not indicate that the animals have noticed your presence. Other Deer Related Information There is a lot to learn about deer, their behavior, and aspects of hunting deer. The following information will help to expand your knowledge of deer and deer hunting. What Is Deer Meat Called? Wild game meat is generally grouped together under the broad term “venison.” Deer meat is included in this descriptor, but people often refer to it as “deer meat” to differentiate deer meat from other venison. How Fast Can A Deer Run? Deer rely on their speed for survival, making their fast running an essential part of their survival strategy in the wild. Deer can attain speeds of up to 30 mph or 48 kph. Why Do Deers Stand Up On Their Hind Legs? Deer stand on their hind legs for two main reasons. Both male and female deer will stand on their hind legs to reach tasty leaves higher up on the tree. Male deer, or bucks, may stand up on their hind legs to fight with each other using their razor-sharp front hooves as weapons. Bucks will often fight in this way if their antlers have yet to grow in. What Wind Speed Is Too Much For Deer Hunting? Wind affects deer behavior and movement, which can affect your hunting experience. Deer tend to bed down when it is calm or when the wind rises above 15 mph or 24 kph. Deer move around less when the wind rises above this velocity, making them harder to find. Strong winds can also affect the accuracy of your shot, especially if you are bow hunting.
